The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of his move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
