European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
