TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Experimental Treatment Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Worries

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

According to TikTok, the service has taken down violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.

Within moments of joining one community, a vendor posted contact information, where most purchases occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Details and Pricing

Inside these groups, posts show dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should be used, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively monitored dangerous content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has already seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially serious health risks”.
