Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
